First Namibian Dinosaur Found
September 10, 1998

The first Namibian dinosaur, a Massospondylus, was found by scientists from the Universities of Würzburg, Liverpool and Johannesburg. The fossil is an impression made in 200 million-year-old porous sandstone from Waterberg National Park. Dinosaur trackways, fossilized impressions of footprints, were also found nearby.

This early Jurassic Massospondylus was about 19.5 to 26 feet (6 to 8 m) long. It lived in a very dry environment, similar to the Kalahari desert, with sand dunes and sparse vegetation.

Professor Bruce Rubidge of Witwatersrand University said that this discovery will help in the understanding of the breakup of Pangaea, the Mesozoic Era supercontinent.

Massospondylus was a medium sized, plant-eating dinosaur whose fossils have been found in South Africa and Arizona, USA. It had a small, narrow head, a long neck, a long tail, and very large, clawed, five-fingered hands. It had two kinds of teeth, serrated, cutting teeth and blunt teeth in the cheek area for chewing. It was one of the early large dinosaurs, the Prosauropods. Its name means "massive vertebrae." It could walk on two or four legs.
