King Tutankhamun
This solid gold mask of King Tutankhamun (also called King Tut) is inlaid with semi-precious stones (carnelian, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and amazonite) and decorated with enamels. On Tut's headdress, the mask has a vulture's head and royal uraeus (a cobra in an upright position, a sign of royalty in ancient Egypt). The mask is about 54 cm (21 inches) tall and weighs about 11 kg (24 pounds). It was made approximately 3,500 years ago in ancient Egypt. This mask covered Tutankhamun's mummified head, shoulders and part of his chest. King Tut's tomb was found by Howard Carter (a British Egyptologist) in 1922.
