Location: Saudi Arabia (officially called the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) is a country in southwestern Asia (in the Middle East). Saudi Arabia is bordered by Iraq, the Persian Gulf, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Yemen, the Red Sea, and Jordan.

Capital: Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Size: Saudi Arabia covers about 2,149,690 square kilometers (a bit over one-fifth the size of the USA). Saudi Arabia is the 14th largest country in the world.

Population: The people of Saudi Arabia are called Saudi Arabians. Saudi Arabia has the 46th largest population of any country in the world. The population of Saudi Arabia is about 26,131,703 (as of July, 2010).

Major Cities: Riyadh, Jiddah, Mecca, Medina, Ad Dammam.

Government: Saudi Arabia is a monarchy that is divided into 13 provinces. A national holiday is Unification of the Kingdom, which is celebrated on September 23.

Language: Arabic is the official language.

Education: Girls in Saudi Arabia go to school for an average of 13 years; boys go for an average of 14 years.

Literacy Rate: About 78.8% (over three-quarters) of the adults in Saudi Arabia can read and write. About 84.7% of the men and 70.8% of the women are literate.

Official Religion: All of the people of Saudi Arabia are Muslims.

The Arabic writing is the Islamic statement of faith, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet." Green is the traditional color of Islam.

Saudi Arabia's flag was adopted on March 15, 1973. The flag's design was based on the flag that represented the army of Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud, the first King of Saudi Arabia.

Climate: Saudi Arabia's climate is harsh, a dry desert with great temperature extremes.

Terrain: Saudi Arabia is mostly an uninhabited, sandy desert.

Highest Point: The highest point in Saudi Arabia is Jabal Sawda' at 3,133 m, located in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the Red Sea.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in Saudi Arabia is the Persian Gulf, at sea level (in northeastern Saudi Arabia).

Natural Resources: Petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold, copper.

Major Industries: Crude oil production, petroleum refining, basic petrochemicals, ammonia, industrial gases, sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), cement, fertilizer, plastics, metals, commercial ship repair, commercial aircraft repair, construction.

Agricultural Products: Wheat, barley, tomatoes, melons, dates, citrus; mutton, chickens, eggs, milk.
